…one giant leap in satisfaction for those of us who like to find a proper Toughie in the middle of the paper.

When I first started blogging Toughies I used to enjoy Firefly’s puzzles. No longer.

Toughie 1295

Toughie No 1295 by Giovanni

More Sherry, Vicar?

BD Rating – Difficulty **Enjoyment ***

This one from Giovanni was not too tricky apart from one unknown (to me) word at 18d, which was difficult to solve without a bit of trial and error. At one stage I thought we were getting a theme based on songs about young ladies but two isn’t really a theme – although I did end up humming the tunes all morning.

You never know which Petitjean is going to show up, but I should have been forewarned by the editor’s decision to publish this one on a Tuesday.

I enjoyed this puzzle from Sparks, in spite of the reservations expressed below.

BD Rating – Difficulty ***/****Enjoyment ***

I made fairly slow progress to begin with while I was refamiliarising myself with Excalibur’s quirky style. It took me some time to finish off the north-east corner and that accounts for the extra half star in the difficulty rating

Thanks to ProXimal for an enjoyable puzzle and one with no obscure words. It took me longer than it should have to unravel a few bits of wordplay.

Toughie 1290

Toughie No 1290 by Dada + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + BD Rating - Difficulty *** - Enjoyment ** An unusually lacklustre puzzle by Dada's standards that left me wishing I'd stayed in Africa. Reading this review, you might wish I had too.

Don’t look back!

BD Rating – Difficulty ***Enjoyment *****

As always with Notabilis, this was a very enjoyable puzzle. Although a few of the answers were new to me, they were readily derived from the wordplay. Watch out for the reversals – there are six of them in all!

An anagram in a Beam Toughie! I never thought I’d live to see the day. This was a tricky puzzle with a mixture of straightforward clues and some that were definitely not straightforward. Some of the wordplay needed teasing out. I enjoyed the challenge and won’t be complaining about lack of toughness this week.
