Petitjean – John Pidgeon

It is with great sadness that I learned today that John passed away yesterday.  According to the announcement in the Daily Telegraph “he did not have a battle with cancer; he did his best to get along with it”.

We often joked on here, in the words of Gnomethang, “I always consider that I need to put a ‘slightly mad’ hat on in order to solve a Petitjean crossword.” and he enjoyed this comment so much that he included it in his Wikipedia entry.

Sloggers and Betters 13

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

What? As I’m sure you are all aware the site has been suffering from poor performance for a long time. Evohosting, the previous hosting company, recommended that I switch to a Virtual Private Server (VPS) provided by Daily Internet, their parent company. I decided instead to move the site to a VPS from SmartHosting over the weekend of 27th/28th February.… Read More

We have lift off!

Update:
The resources allocated to the site have been significantly increased and it is “so far so good”. Let’s hope it stays that way as it has been another very frustrating day.

Welcome to the new server.  There are still a few teething problems, but they should be ironed out over the next few days.

Because of the problems I have postponed this week’s Rookie puzzle until further notice.… Read More

Help to save the Indy Cryptic puzzles

Many of you will read of the Independent’s plans to produce an online, rather than print edition.  At the time of writing, it is not clear where this leaves their crossword.

Under Mike Hutchinson’s editorship, a great many of Big Dave’s NTSPP setters have gone on to get their first published break, and losing this valuable resource would most certainly limit the options for newer setters to break into the field.… Read More
